# Your Mac is slow for a while after installing or updating

> Apps take longer to launch and an update can take several minutes on a busy Mac. What is happening, how long it should last, and when it is a problem worth reporting.

## What you are seeing

During and shortly after AgenShield is installed — or while an update is
applying — your Mac feels sluggish. Applications take longer to open, the
update itself runs for several minutes, and the AgenShield dashboard is slow to
respond.

## What it means

When AgenShield first starts, it takes an inventory of everything already
running on your Mac so it knows what was there before it arrived. On a
development machine that can be several hundred processes, and the inventory has
to identify each one.

On a busy Mac — many browser windows, several coding assistants open at once,
other security software also installed — that inventory competes with the
installer for the same machine, and both take longer.

**Your Mac is not at risk during this period, and nothing is being blocked
incorrectly.** Approving the extensions completes setup; until your
organization's policy has been delivered and applied, AgenShield watches without
blocking anything. Either way the slowdown is startup work, not enforcement.

## How long it should last

If things have not settled within about ten minutes, that is worth reporting.

## Affected and fixed versions

Versions up to `2026.8.4` could get stuck in this state much longer than they
should: the startup inventory could repeat every thirty seconds instead of
running once, and could keep running alongside a duplicate set of background
checks that should have stopped as soon as the security extension came up.

## What to do

    Let the install or update finish and wait a couple of minutes. Do not
    restart the Mac mid-install — the extensions are still being approved.

    The slowdown lasts longer while AgenShield is waiting for its security
    extension to be approved, because it falls back to slower checks in the
    meantime. Approving in System Settings shortens it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Close what you do not need">
    Quitting a few browser windows or idle coding assistants during the install
    measurably shortens it on an already-loaded Mac.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Update to the fixed version">
    On `2026.8.5` or later the startup inventory backs off instead of repeating,
    and the duplicate background checks stop as soon as the security extension
    is running.

## How to confirm it has settled

Open AgenShield from the menu bar. Once it reports the security extension and
the network extension as active, and your organization's policy as applied,
startup is complete and normal responsiveness should return.

## A separate cause worth ruling out

If your Mac is slow **all the time**, not just around an install or update, that
is a different problem. Check whether the Mac is short on memory — open Activity
Monitor, choose the Memory tab, and look at the Memory Pressure graph. A Mac
that is consistently under memory pressure will feel slow regardless of what
AgenShield is doing.

## When to escalate

Contact support if, on `2026.8.5` or later:

* the slowdown lasts more than about ten minutes after an install or update, or
* it returns every time the Mac wakes or restarts, or
* an update takes longer than about five minutes to apply.
