What you see

  • The AgenShield menu bar shows Offline, or says the background service is not running.
  • The AgenShield dashboard stays on its connecting screen and offers only Download diagnostics, which reports that the background service was unreachable.
  • Clicking Start in the menu bar asks for your password, starts the service, and a few seconds later it is offline again.
  • In the Frontegg Portal the device stops reporting.
This typically follows a moment when the Mac was very slow: waking from a long sleep, resuming after the battery ran out, or running out of memory.

What it means

AgenShield includes an availability safeguard. If it sees that the Mac cannot start even basic system programs for about a minute, it assumes protection might be the cause, pauses enforcement and stops the background service so the Mac stays usable. That is the intended trade: a usable Mac first. In 2026.10.2 and earlier, the safeguard did not reliably let the service come back afterwards. A restart could be undone if the service took longer than about three minutes to start, and a manual Start could be stopped again seconds later. The Mac stays usable, but it is not protected until the service is running again. This is fixed in the release after 2026.10.2: the safeguard no longer stops a service that is starting, and it brings the service back on its own once the Mac has been responsive for a few minutes.

Confirm it

In Terminal:
Could not find service "com.frontegg.AgenShield.daemon" in domain for system means the service is not loaded. If this file exists, the safeguard paused protection:
The safeguard’s log, with the time it acted, is /var/log/agenshield/storm-watchdog.log.

Bring protection back

Upgrade to the current release when you can. Until then, run these two commands in order — removing the file first stops the safeguard from undoing the start:
Give the service up to three minutes to start on a busy Mac, then check:
If it still reports enforcement as paused, run agenshield doctor --fix — see Enforcement Paused.

When to contact support

If the service stops again on its own, or the Mac becomes slow every time the service starts, collect a diagnostics bundle and contact support. Include roughly when the Mac woke up or restarted.
